QUINTESSENTIAL BOYS is a 4-piece jazz combo made up of very talented teen players from the Toronto area. Their talent, sound and soul belie their age.

Each member has been performing for audiences for at least the past five years. QB members have performed at the Toronto Jazz Festival, Beaches Jazz Festival, Partis Gras at the Distillery District, Markham Jazz Festival, Unionville Concert Series, at Caribbean Jazz Festivals and at numerous other festivals, jazz clubs and private functions.

The Quintessential Boys is the group to watch as they garner extraordinary attention every time they perform.  Their debut CD, entitled Under Age, is a delicious range of jazz with hints of caribbean, soul, latin and funk.

QUINCY BULLEN, Piano

15-year old pianist Quincy Bullen follows in the footsteps of his Juno Award winning musician father, Eddie Bullen. Quincy is the consummate performer.  He studies piano with his father and at the New Conservatory of Music. His talent and focus have earned him numerous music scholarships and awards. Quincy studies the performing arts in the Arts York Program at Unionville High School.
   
At the age of seven, Quincy performed at the Caribbean Sunfest Festival before an audience of approximately eight thousand. Since then, he has been wowing audiences with his jazz piano skills. He has performed at the Toronto Jazz Festival, Beaches International Jazz Festival, Partis Gras at the Toronto Distillery District, Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts, Collingwood Jazz & Blues Festival, Niagara Smooth Jazz Fest, the Mississauga Living Arts Centre and at various festivals in the Carribean.

During the past two years, Quincy has also embarked on an acting career which has yielded him several principal roles on stage, television and in film.

ROB CHRISTIAN, Sax and Flute

17 year-old Rob Christian is an award winning jazz flute and sax player, who has been performing extensively in the Toronto area for over 5 years and has released several CD's.

Rob has been selected to receive the Moe Koffman Memorial Scholarship from the University of Toronto in 2007, received an IAJE (International Association for Jazz Education) Scholarship, in 2006, a Rotary Jazz Award for ‘Up and Coming Jazz Musician’ in 2005 and a $1,500.00, Celebration of the Arts Award in 2004. Rob spent two years in the 'audition only' Ontario Provincial Honour Band (one year for flute, the other year for alto sax).

In addition to being a member of the Quintessential Boys, Rob also has his own jazz combo and performs regularly with vocalists Sophia Perlman and Maya Chilton. He has studied flute with Geza Farkas (classical) and Bill McBirnie (jazz).





OMAR GITTENS, Drums

Omar Gittens has been studying and performing as a drummer for the last 9 years. He has taken private drumming lessons in Barrie, Ontario with musical mentor Robin Munro and professional drummer Bruce Campbell, (who has studied under the direction of world-renowned drum teacher, Jim Blackley).

Omar is the drummer for the Innisdale Secondary School Stage Band (Jazz Band), Concert Band, Jazz Combo and Show Band, which received the Gold medal at the 2006 Georgian Bay Regional Musicfest (Ontario) in Collingwood. He has performed with the Innisdale Show and Stage Bands at The Barrie Jazz and Blues Festival in 2005 and 2006.   He plays locally in Barrie with The Mark Hathaway Trio, and is a regular sub for the Baytowne Big Band and the Barrie All-City Stage Band. .

Omar has performed with Quincy Bullen for the honourable Oscar Peterson at the African Canadian Achievement Awards in May 2006 and   at Toronto's Uptown Jazz festival at Mel Lastman Square, the Jerk and Jazz festival at Queen’s Park in Toronto, the Barbados on the Water festival at Harbourfront and at several other private and public functions.






LUCIAN GRAY, Bass

Lucian  Gray is a 16 year old bass player who has been performing with and learning from many of the great Canadian musicians such as Alex Dean Colleen Allen, Molly Johnson, Jim Vivian, Pat Collins, Aaron Davis,   Geoff Young, Phil Dwyer, Frank Falco , Eddie Bullen, and his own father, trumpeter Charles Gray.

Lucian has won scholarships and awards from the Yamaha National Music Festivals, Harry Somers Foundation, Chiba Corporations International Peace by Music, Kincardine Summer Music Festival, Kiwanis Music Festival and from Humber College Community School.

He is a Principal Bassist for Claude Watson School for the Arts’ Chamber and Symphonic bands and also a Principal Guitarist for the same school’s Big Band. He  also enjoys playing Jazz and classical music on piano.

Lucian enjoys performing various areas of music from hard rock to free jazz to funk to classical. He has performed at several Jazz Festivals, the Rex and  Top of Senators jazz clubs, concert Halls, private and corporate events. Lucian has made an effort to help out and perform at many charity events such as Doctors Without Borders, People for Education, War Child and Bereaved Families of Ontario.

He is excited about playing as a part of the Quintessential Boys and is ready to make music to inspire himself and hopefully, everyone who hears them.
